Five-time All-Ireland SFC winner Tommy Griffin has announced his retirement from inter-county football, bringing to an end his 12-year career with the Kerry senior panel.

Griffin did not appear for Kerry in the 2011 Championship, having been sidelined by injury for most of the campaign. He informed manager Jack O’Connor of his decision to retire over the weekend.

The versatile Dingle clubman, who is 33, told the Irish Independent: “I have been mulling it over since September and I just feel the time is right now to just hang up the boots and move on.

“The injuries were definitely one factor, as was my age because I’m not getting any younger. I have had my troubles with injuries.

“I spent most of last year doing rehab work, and I would have to spend half of this season trying to get myself right as well, so it had a big say in my decision.”

Griffin was an All-Ireland medal winner with the Kerry seniors in 2000, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2009, and his 40th and final Championship appearance for the Kingdom came in the 2010 All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Down.

Paying tribute to one of the most experienced members of his squad, O’Connor told the Irish Examiner: “My involvement with Tommy goes back to 1998 and winning the Under-21 All-Ireland with him alongside Eamonn Fitzmaurice in the middle of the field.

“He was a great versatile player and he filled in for us very well at full-back in 2009 when we were stuck.

“He owes nothing to Kerry football. He’s had a great career and was unfortunate with injuries. Father Time just seems to have caught up with him.”
